Building your first machine learning portfolio

Team reviewing work on a laptop

For AI and data roles, a portfolio often matters as much as a certificate. It shows that you can take a problem from raw data to a useful result.

Choose 3 strong projects, not 10 small ones

  • An end-to-end prediction project: clean data, build a model, evaluate it and explain the results.
  • A deep learning project with images or text.
  • A generative AI application, such as a RAG assistant or an AI-powered tool with a simple web interface.

Make each project easy to understand

  • A clear README: the problem, the data, your approach, results and limits.
  • Charts that tell the story.
  • A live demo if possible, using a free hosting tier.

What hiring managers look for

  • Sensible choices and honest evaluation, not just high accuracy.
  • Clean, readable code.
  • The ability to explain trade-offs in plain language.

Real problems from your own community or industry, such as Dubai property prices, local transport or Arabic text, stand out more than standard tutorial datasets.
